How Do I know If the Garage Door is Balanced Properly?

Minneapolis Garage DoorWhen the door of your garage is not balanced properly, it can lead to a variety of problems for the homeowner. Identifying the problem can be quite easy, it is in the repair that you need to contact a professional in the Richmond, VA area such as Precisiondoorrichmond.com to ensure the issue is addressed and fixed properly.
The tension in the door spring is significant, and if you are not taking the appropriate precautions during a repair, you risk severe injury or worse. Here are some of the things to consider concerning a garage door that is not balanced properly.
How Can I Tell if the Door is Not Balanced?
Diagnosing a garage door that is improperly balanced is simple. One way is to disengage your garage door Operator from the door and open the door manually 1/2 way. If your door drips down or if the door feels heavy when trying to lift the door then your door is out of balanced and needs to be serviced by a garage door technician.
Why is Balance Important for Garage Doors?
The reason that the balancing is so important in a garage door is the door is not operating properly when misaligned. The longer the issue persists, the more damage that can be done to the rest of the system.
The issue could be a sign there is trouble with the spring, motor, rails, or the door itself. The door needs to close securely to keep out the rain. If the opening is significant, pests and rodents can easily get inside. Once you have mice and rats in the garage, they can get to the attic or behind walls very easily.
Garage Door BalanceHow Can I Fix an Unbalanced Garage Door?
It is important that you get this issue fixed as quickly as possible, but that does not mean to go at it alone. This is one of those repairs that should be left up to the professionals. While it could be as simple as dirt or debris stuck in the track, preventing the door from closing, it could also be a much more complicated issue.
When you call your local garage door specialist, he will repair the issue and maintain the door so that it runs perfectly in the future. The repair will eliminate you or your family being hurt when the door malfunctions from being off balance.

If your garage door needs servicing and/ or your door is not balanced correctly, Call Precision Garage Doors of Richmond at 804-405-8805 today.

 Garage Door Maintenance is Important!

Most of us have garage doors. But we usually do not think about them much until they need repairing. That is the time that you normally start looking for a garage door repair professional.

The truth is, you will be a lot better off if you do not wait until the doors stop working to call a service company. There is regular maintenance that the company can do to help keep your doors from breaking down. At these appointments, the service person will inspect the doors thoroughly and look for any possible problems.

Garage doors are pretty simple devices. They operate through the use of springs and a low power motor to guide the open and closing of the door. Simple as they seem, it is still best to call in a professional when they are not working.
Garage door springs hold a lot of tension. For this reason, it is best and safer to have a professional do the replacement. These are the parts that most frequently wear out. If you are noticing that your doors are beginning to open and close more slowly, chances are the springs will need to be replaced soon.
If you cannot get the door open at all, it is possible that the remote control is the problem. If you cannot see any other problems, try replacing the remote batteries before you call in professional help.

Another potential problem is misalignment of the doors on their tracks. During regular maintenance appointments, your service person will inspect the tracks, as well as ensuring they are properly lubricated. He will look for any loose screws as well as areas that seem like they could cause trouble. An example of this is an area of the track that is becoming misshapen due to constant scraping while vehicles are backed out.

Go ahead and schedule an appointment for maintenance before the door actually breaks down. By finding a company to perform regular maintenance and inspection, you will have someone you know to call when there is an actual problem.

Precision Garage Door Service of Richmond specializes in garage door repair, service, sales and installation of garage doors and openers.

Our offices are Open 24hrs and 7 days a week.

Garage Door sound like a "Beast"?

Do you hear horrible sounds coming from your garage every time someone uses the garage door? Does your garage door wake you up when used?

Whatever is causing your garage door to sound like a beast, it’s best to figure out the cause and put a stop to it before you end up the least popular house on the block – or before something goes wrong and someone gets hurt.

What’s making all that noise?

No garage door or opener runs absolutely silently, but there is a difference between normal function and a beast. As with any machine with gears and moving parts, there are a number of things that can be causing a particular type of noise or malfunction. Depending on the model and how it’s installed, even some brand-new garage doors and garage door openers can make a surprising amount of noise.

One of the most common causes of garage door noise is friction. As garage door opener mechanisms age, their parts can lose their lubrication and noisily grind against each other. Bolts and screws can loosen, and parts may wear out and need replacement. Any of these normal elements of wear and tear will cause your garage door opener to get a little louder. Same with the hinges and rollers on the garage door itself. While this doesn’t necessarily signal a particular problem, it can be annoying and inconvenience. But some causes of garage door noise, especially in older models or those that have sustained damage, will need attention quickly before they become a safety concern.

Can I fix it myself?

In many cases you can simply apply a lubricant to the moving parts. Lubricants specially made for garage door openers are available, but any good silicone based lubricant will work. (Note: Please don’t use WD-40! While it will help silence the beast – it tends to attract additional dirt and can drip on your car). Then, double check that all the nuts and bolts are secure and tighten any in need.

When should I call a professional?

You should contact a professional garage door company if you’re in doubt about proceeding, or if the parts to your garage door or opener need replacement. If your garage door opener is older than 1993 and is starting to act up, it’s best to have it replaced. Modern garage door openers run quieter, and are built to higher standards than those constructed before that time.

6 Tips for Getting Ready for Fall

Summer's over, school has been in session for a month and weather temps are dropping. Here at Precision Door Service of Richmond, we have switched to hot coffee instead of iced and have even broken out some warmer clothing! So, how are you getting ready now that Fall is upon us?

Here are a few tips to prepare for fall from our fellow employees here at Precision Door:
  1. Goodbye Summer: Summer is full of pool parties, bbqs, and spending as much time outside as possible. With the weather getting cooler and kids back at school, make sure to close your pool appropriately and put any toys or outside furniture away. You don't want the cold weather to ruin anything for next summer!
  2. Tune Up: As the weather drops, people tend to use their garages more often. Who wants to park outside and have to walk in the cold weather!? Be sure to call us for a garage door tune up so you don’t run into any problems – we even have a $49.95 tune up special going on right now.
  3. Cold Winter: Speaking of cars, make sure your vehicle is all ready for this brutal winter we are supposed to get! Get your car serviced just in case it needs work done. You never know how long a car can take to get fixed.
  4. Cover Up: Something as simple as covering your air conditioning unit could save you a lot of money in the long run. Throw a plastic tarp over top so no leaves or bugs can get in and ruin your ac unit while it's not in use.
  5. New to the Neighborhood: If you’re new to the Richmond, VA area and are looking for a garage installation, request a free quote on our website. And welcome to the neighborhood!
  6. Liftmaster App: Did you know there is an app that allows you to open your garage from your iPhone? Check out the Liftmaster App for an easy way to open your garage door – from any location!
